Volunteers save Scalby Library from closure
The library had been earmarked for potential closure in February 2017 unless a community group came forward to run it.
The changes are part of a huge overhaul of library services by North Yorkshire County Council in the face of budget cuts. The council announced in July 2015 that from Spring 2017 there would be seven core libraries, five hybrid libraries and 30 community-managed libraries in the county.

Isobel Nixon, chairman of the Scalby Library Volunteer Management Group, said: “Six new people have agreed to become trustees of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation to be called Newby and Scalby Library and Information Centre.
“We will ensure the library’s services continue to be delivered, whilst Newby and Scalby Parish Council will take on the responsibility for the library building since its office is now at the library.
“We both understand what a vital service local libraries provide to the communities they serve and are determined this, and the wonderful Home Library Service should continue.”
